Under the new rules published by the UK government on 8 October, EU / EEA and Swiss citizens will not be allowed to travel to the UK using their national identity cards as of October 2021. As of this date, date passports will be required for entry. .
These new regulations will not apply to EU citizens already living in the UK if they have successfully applied for the EU settlement regime. Why is the EU settlement system important and what is it?
The EU settlement scheme was presented due to Brexit preparations, at which point the UK will depart from the European Union. The Scheme handles requests from EU / EEA (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and Swiss nationals currently living in the UK to legally reside in the UK after Brexit.
The Brexit transition phase will end on December 31, 2020, ending the freedom of movement. All EU / EEA citizens wishing to live in the UK should be physically present in the UK before 31 December 2020 and apply for status under the EU settlement regime by 30 June 2021.
EU Settlement Scheme who affects?
Any individual who is a citizen of an EU / EEA country and Switzerland, together with their close relatives, who wish to continue to reside in the UK, must apply for the Program (even if they have a UK partner) by 30 June 2021. This includes anyone who currently holds a status under the EEA Regulations, such as an EEA residence or permanent residence card.

EU citizens residing in the UK who have family members joining them in the UK after the transition phase (from 1 January 2021 onwards) will still be able to apply under the EU settlement regime after December 31, 2020, only if the relationship lasted before the end of the transition period and exists at the time of submitting the application. Family members who do so may initially be required to apply for an EU / EEA family permit in order to come to the UK at this time, and then submit the application form in the UK, before 30 June 2021.
What is the deadline to apply for the EUSS?
If you are an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen, you should physically reside in the UK as of 31 December 2020.
If you wish to remain in the UK after Brexit, you should apply for pre-settlement or settlement status under the EU settlement regime by 30 June 2021. Then again, it is suggested that the application should be submitted last December 31, 2020.
If you are unable to meet this requirement and wish to return to the UK after the transition period, you will be required to apply in accordance with the UK immigration system in effect at that time from your country of nationality or residence.
